Warnke released Higher Education - an awful looking record with his third wife, Rose, who offered little or nothing to the album other than her gaudy looking appearance on the cover. Warnke's wife was, by most accounts, a total nut who loved indulging in the wealth of the increasingly expanding Warnke empire. In 1985 Rose Hall Warnke wrote a book titled The Great Pretender in which she claimed that Spinal Tap was an actual bonafide "satanic rock group." It seemed she was far more susceptible to phoney Satanists than most.
Warnke's expanding success was now growing parallel with the enormous secular stand-up comedy boom so well associated with the nineteen eighties. As comedy clubs popped up all over North America, more and more Christians started trying their hand at a religious form of comedy. Christian comedy records were suddenly more common and Word's Myrrh outfit started releasing some new names - like Leon Patillo, a one-time member of Santana, and his LP of Classic Comedy & Liveable Lessons. Due to the over saturation of stand-up in the secular market at the time, most of those new Christian comedians now enjoy the same status that so many talentless secular comics of the eighties also maintain - that of the unemployed comedy nobody. Many, like Patillo however, are trolling in hackneyed genres more suited to their personalities. Patillo, whose 1986 comedy record featured such comedic tracks as 'My Salvation,' 'Elijah,' and 'Prayer' now touts himself as a motivational speaker who can "help Christians reach their income potential."
Warnke found himself making more money through this period than almost any other working comic religious or otherwise. Doing half stand-up - half sermon gave him license to pull something most comedians would never dream of doing at the end of their shows: ask the audience for money. At this point Mike Warnke was raking in donations for "Mike Warnke Ministries," something that is now acknowledged as having been a front. In 1985-86 Warnke Ministries made over 1.5 million dollars from donations (or "love offerings" as they called them) alone. They claimed that their ministry needed money to help operate their mission that would house runaways, recovering drug addicts, former Satanists and the like. All of which, of course, was untrue. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were also quickly used up by the crazy Rose Hall Warnke who according to a person in their employ, quoted in Selling Satan, would buy things like "100 pairs of cheap tennis shoes at Wal-Mart." Far from being the usual straight laced person who usually dresses up in
a suit and has long hair, coming out of the Youth for Christ movement
during the 1960's as well as being a Vietnam war veteran, Mike's
approach wasn't the usual. He was wasn't about religion or any
particular church. And for someone who has had his experiences and
background, to speak the way he does and act the way he does would
convince many a skeptic or cynic even when others haven't. The one
group of people he had the most profound influence on were the
teenagers. This man has probably convinced more people to turn their
lives around then just about anybody else I've ever heard of! I sat
right behind him in the choir loft. He was a very loving, warm
individual who didn't go around looking down his nose at anyone. He

YES this is a Christian record, but this guy
is really something else...used to be a satanist & druggie, then
found Christianity, and went on to talk about his old self, but with an
edge and super intensity. He'll even say stuff like 'I really don't care
if you don't like me', so yea... not your normal Christian
record... we've even actually listened to this all the way

Mike Warnke is a Christian evangelist and comedian. With the success of his books and recordings, Warnke became one of evangelical Christianity's best-known experts on the subject of Satanism before his claims of having been a Satanist high priest were debunked in 1991 by the Christian magazine, Cornerstone.
In 1982, Warnke began to exaggerate his achievements. During the 1980s, Warnke's claims of academic degrees increased from two Bachelor's degrees to two Master's Degrees to a Doctorate of Philosophy. In The Satan Seller, Warnke claims to have been wounded twice while in Vietnam. In Hitchhiking on Hope Street, he claimed he had been wounded 5 times. Warnke followed up his interest in the Syro-Chaldean tradition and his 1970s ordination as a deacon with a 1983 ordination by independent bishop Richard Morrill, lately of the Byzantine Catholic Church, Inc. This ordination allowed Warnke to call himself bishop.
On May 16, 1985, Warnke appeared in a prime-time news report about Satanism on ABC’s 20/20. In the show's episode titled "The Devil Worshippers", Warnke was included in a number of segments where he discussed the implements and clothing used in Satanic ceremonies, a scar allegedly indicating where he was repeatedly cut so that his blood could be used in Satanic ceremonies, and what drew him to Satanism. After Warnke's appearance on 20/20, he was frequently cited as an expert on the occult by Christian radio host Bob Larson and the Chick Publications stable of authors.
In the spring of 1993, Warnke submitted to the authority of an assembly of ministers "acting as elders," acknowledging his "ungodliness," his "multiple divorces," his "failure as husband, father, and friend", and of "embellishment and exaggeration ... in an attempt ... to entertain," and offering to pay back taxes to the federal government. The group recommended specific changes to the ministry, including a salary cap and accountability reports. Nonetheless, he continued to "stand by [his] testimony of former Satanic involvement" stating in a 2000 interview with the Daily Oklahoman, "Exaggeration did creep into some of my stories, but my testimony is still my testimony." As of 2006, a letter posted on Warnke's web site indicated the group had released him as having met their accountability requirements.
In 1997, Warnke suffered a heart attack. In 2000, he began attempting a comeback, limited to small churches in Kentucky. In 2002, he published Friendly Fire: A Recovery Guide for Believers Battered by Religion, an account of what he perceived as his unfair treatment by fellow Christians in the wake of the Cornerstone exposé. By 2004, he was making occasional performing appearances at churches around the country, often referred to simply as "Christian comedian Mike Warnke," and sometimes as a former Satanic priest.
