Bobcat Goldthwait - An Evening With Bobcat Goldthwait, Share The Warmth 1987

On: Sunday, July 3, 2011

Bobcat Goldthwait
Robert Francis Goldthwait
aka Bobcat
Syracuse, New York, USA
May 26 1962 -

Bobcat Goldthwait (simply known as Bobcat) is one of several comics who emerged during the '80s and became known for his persona (à la Howie Mandel, Sam Kinison). Until later in his career, he rarely appeared out of character: a gutsy goofball with a grating voice. Bobcat is perhaps best remembered for his big debut role as "himself" in the movie Police Academy 2, the following Police Academy movies, and his string of comedy specials, including one in 1987, aptly titled Bobcat Goldthwait: Is He Always Like That? He also appeared in offbeat movies such as One Crazy Summer and the cult-classic Tape Heads.
Mr. Goldthwait enjoyed his heyday in the coming-of-age of nightclub comedy era, but his popularity decreased in the mid-'90s, when a subtler approach to comedy -- like that of Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen Degeneres -- hit the scene. By then he had developed his own loyal following, however, and recorded one of his concerts, Meat Bob Live from 1992; he also can be heard on several of the Comic Relief recordings.
Throughout the second decade of his career, Bobcat continued to appear in bit parts in a slew of Hollywood B-movies. He also made countless appearances on popular network television shows throughout the '90s, including Married...With Children, Hollywood Squares, and as well as hosting his own comedy series in a quiz show format called Bobcat's Big Ass Show for FX.
Bobcat got his start performing in comedy clubs when he was 15 and still attending high school. When he was 19, he made his first television appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. This is not the first time he would make a splash on the late-night talk-show circuit. He is also (perhaps not so fondly) remembered for an Andy Kaufman-esque stint on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that involved setting a chair on fire and ensuing arson charges.
Besides setting fire to studio furniture, Bobcat has done almost everything on stage, including shaving his already-balding head! (He is known for wearing somewhat of a mullet.) He has always seemed to maintain an air of rebelliousness in his work. Besides acting, Mr. Goldthwait has directed the cult film Shakes the Clown, which he also wrote, and directed Aquabats "Super Rad" video. (Seemingly uncharacteristically, Bobcat has also used his unique voice to narrate and play roles in several children's cartoons -- including the voice of Pain in Disney's animated feature Hercules, among others.)
Mr. Goldthwait has two children -- a daughter, Tasha, who is also an actress, and stepson, Tyler. He has been married twice, and is currently married to actress Nikki Cox, who is 16 years his junior.   Source AllMusic.com By Sandy Lawson

Bobcat Goldthwait - Meat Bob 1988

May 26 1962 -
Robert Francis 'Bobcat' Goldthwait, born May 26, 1962, is an American comedian. He is most widely known for his high pitch voice during his comedy acts.
He was born in Syracuse, New York in 1962. He decided on a career as a comedian at an early age and was performing professionally while still in high school at the age of 15. He and classmate Tom Kenny performed in a comedy duo, billing themselves as "Bobcat and Tomcat". Goldthwait became recognized as a solo stand-up comedian and had three televised concert specials in the 1980s: Bob Goldthwait - Is He Like That All the Time?, Evening with Bobcat Goldthwait: Share the Warmth (1987) (V) and Meat Bob.
Goldthwait's first major film role was in "Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment (1985)". He reprised the role in the next two films in the series.
During the fall of 1993 Goldthwait did stand up material as an opening act for Nirvana on what would be their final North American tour.
He has made several guest appearances on talk shows as well as comedy programs including The Ben Stiller Show. On May 9, 1994, he made a controversial appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (1992) where on impulse he set a couch on fire. This incident was then the basis of the plot for his subsequent appearance on "The Larry Sanders Show" (1992).
One of the most recognizable features of Goldthwait's performances is his voice. Goldthwait has voiced characters on the television series "Capitol Critters" (1992); "The Moxy & Flea Show" (1995); "Unhappily Ever After" (1995); "Hercules" (1998) and "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" (2000). He has also appeared as himself hosting the comedy quiz show "Bobcat's Big Ass Show" (1998).
Goldthwait has released two comedy albums: "Meat Bob" (1988) on Chrysalis Records and "I Don't Mean to Insult You, but You Look Like Bobcat Goldthwait" (23 September, 2003) on Comedy Central Records.
He made his feature film directorial debut with Shakes the Clown (1991), which he wrote and starred in as well.
His film Windy City Heat (2003) (TV) won a Comedia Award for Best Comedy Film at Montreal's Just for Laughs Film Festival in 2004.
He married Ann Luly in 1986 at the age of 24. The couple have two children (now grown), Tasha and Taylor, and divorced in May 1998. At one time, Goldthwait was engaged to his "Unhappily Ever After" co-star Nikki Cox, but the couple has since split.
Bobcat began directing ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (2003) in the fall 2004 season. Since joining the show's crew, the ratings went up to 2 million viewers a night, with the numbers rising nearly 50% with the teenage demographic. In May of 2006, he left to pursue his film career as a filmmaker/director but has since returned to the show.
Goldthwait's most recent feature, Sleeping Dogs Lie (formally Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006/I)), starring Melinda Page Hamilton, was in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and it was part of the "Independent Dramatic Features" competition. Sleeping Dogs Lie is about a youthful, impulsive sexual encounter which opens the door to a dark comedy about the complexities of honesty. It was also nominated for the Grand Jury Prize in the "Dramatic Features" category. Sleeping Dogs Lie was picked up in a mid-six figure deal for distribution in north America by Roadside Attractions & Samuel Goldwyn Films at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. A French film company called Gaumont bought it for the international rights to the film in France. Tartan Films, a UK-based production company, also bought it for international rights in United Kingdom. The film was released in the US on October 20, 2006.    Source: IMDB.COM

Bobcat Goldthwait - Is He Like That All The Time 1989

This is a tape made by HBO evidently as an HBO comedy special (although I personally never saw it broadcast) in San Francisco. I think it is vastly better than the previous 'Share the Warmth' video. Bob is funnier and has more clever material in this performance than in the earlier tape. Some of the funniest material on the tape is actually in the introduction and credits as Bob does guest spots on a local radio station. One of the things that I truly like about Bobcat is his spontaneity and interaction with the audience, and this time is no exception. Here he climbs a giant speaker stand to take an aerial shot of the audience with an 'earthquake-cam' effect, he berates and trips over the cameramen, and has a couple of witty dialogues with hecklers, for example. I would never heckle this guy: despite outward appearances, he thinks fast on his feet, and always comes out the winner.
The material is mostly good, but some of it is a bit dated (such as the Oliver North trial) which is really the only reason I gave it only four stars. It is less than an hour long, and has long been out of print, but if you can find a copy at a decent price (and can remember the 1980s well enough to get the jokes), by all means snap one up and prepare for a hilarious encounter with one of the most original and entertaining live comics still working today. Bobcat Goldthwait - I Don't Mean to Insult You, But You Look Like Bobcat Goldthwait 2003

Just like Emo Philips, whether you're going to enjoy a Bobcat Goldthwait album or not depends on your ability to stomach his delivery. He's toned it down quite a bit since his last album came out 11 years previously, but there's enough of his tense oafishness to drive away the nonbelievers. He'll never be accused of being serene, but Goldthwait seems quite a bit more centered than most will remember. I Don't Mean to Insult You, But You Look Like Bobcat Goldthwait draws quite a bit from the comedian's experience as a huge star in the early '90s and a "whatever happened to" guy in the 2000s. He handles it well, aware that the Seinfeld era isn't the perfect time for his style, and he's ultra-appreciative of his audience (his exit on the album is actually kinda heartwarming). Most of the material is topical, but a routine based around the Fabio versus a goose incident sounds like it's well past the expiration date. Riffing on Katie Couric and Jay Leno's distaste for him is particularly funny, and the opening explanation for the Hollywood Squares firing is a highlight. The biggest surprise is how often he goes off the script and just jaws with the audience. It's very entertaining and in some strange way he seems at peace with himself and his place in the world. Or at least as at peace as the director of Shakes the Clown can be. Source: AllMusic.com David Jeffries
