Allan Sherman Book And A Dr Demento Documentary Project

On: Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Two projects came across my radar in the last day or so -

One is a new book about Allan Sherman, one of my personal favorites. Here's some information on the "Overweight Sensation, The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman and author Mark Cohen. The book is available from Amazon and the usual biblio-outlets.

Also, funds are being raised for a project on Dr. Demento. If you are a fan, take a look at this LINK.
Pledges can be as little as $1 USD and the drive ends in just 3 days Saturday May 4, 2:59am EDT.

The Kickstarter "rules" - if the target dollar amount is  reached on time, then the project is actually "funded." If the pledges fall short of the target, then no funds are awarded.
Kickstarter is "a home for everything from films, games, and music to art, design, and technology.  Kickstarter is full of projects, big and small, that are brought to life through the direct support of people like you. Since our launch in 2009, more than 3.9 million people have pledged over $589 million, funding more than 40,000 creative projects. Thousands of creative projects are raising funds on Kickstarter right now."

Judy Tenuta - Worship Me Pigs (Video) 1991

On: Friday, April 26, 2013

Judy Tenuta
Judy Tenuta
Nov 07 1956 -

"Petite flower, earth mother goddess, geisha girl, healer of hermaphrodites, and empress of Elvis impersonators" are all words this gum-spitting, male-bashing, and undeniably brilliant comedienne uses to describe herself. Ms. Judy Tenuta's comic stylings border on performance art; she never appears out of character when being interviewed. Tenuta's stage persona is as colorful as the garb she wears on stage (Goddess outfits) while attacking audience members in a fun and feminist fashion. Those two words could end up in the same sentence together? Who knew? During her act, Judy Tenuta can be seen mesmerizing the audience with her accordion and singing wacky songs while attempting to convert all to a religion of her own persuasion: "Judyism." She collects canned goods from the audience, as "offerings for the Goddess," and demands nothing less from her devotees/pigs/stud puppets than complete adoration. Her voice (one of her more notable features, if you make it past the prom dresses) is even comedic as she exaggerates her inflections ranging from sweet-sing-songy-sappy to sounding like a big brass band right outside your window at six a.m. This may be what accounts for such a clear-cut line between Judy Tenuta fans and non-fans. "Ya either love her or ya hate her." ~MTV
Here's a shocker - Judy was married to Emo Philips...

Ron 'Pate's Debonairs & Rev Fred Lane - Raudelunas 'Pataphysical Revue 1975

Fred Lane

NOTHING could prepare you for this still astonishing album - the record of a single, unrepeatable night in the Deep South of America. The performers include many who went on to be new music luminaries, including Anne LeBaron, LaDonna Smith and Davey Williams, but the monstrous soul who steals the show is the inimitable and brilliant Reverend Fred Lane. Not only does he wow the listener with his cracked “stripmine” crooning of hoary standards, he baffles you with zany jokes and disarming patter. The music is uniformly stupendous, ranging from serious composition to puerile industrial din. Lovingly restored with lots of beautiful archival photographs and a text by Craig Nutt (“Ron Pate”). Audibly a work of genius.
"No other record has ever come as close to realising Alfred Jarry's desire 'to make the soul monstrous' – or even had the vision or invention to try. It's all over the place. The sleevenotes describe it as 'the best thing ever' - time has not damaged this audacious claim." ~The Wire

Andrew Dice Clay - Day The Laughter Died 1 (1990) & 2 (1993)

On: Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Andrew Dice Clay
Andrew Clay Silverstein
Sep 29 1957 -
All right, people--I'll be the first to admit Dice is no comic genius. He had a good two-year run, made a feature film (Ford Fairlane) that tanked, p.o.ed a lot of people in the process, and you know what? He's still out there doing it!
The media circus has died down, and while most Diceheads got their kicks from his first album (simply titled "DICE") and the video that came with it ("The Diceman Cometh"), this two-CD tour de force came, saw, conquered, and it'll be back in an hour--get it?
With almost two hours to kill, from start to finish, Dice takes his time with the show, and organically spouts jokes that end up being riotous. By the end, the whole crowd realizes they've been part of something timeless, and 14 years later, this album is still funny as hell.
His act might have gotten stale, but this is THE quintessential Dice album to own. ~Amazon customer
