Lou Monte was Best known for his novelty hits "Pepino the Italian  Mouse," "Lazy Mary" and "Domenic the Donkey." His Italian-American  dialect gave his songs a unique style which was featured on 13 albums.  In the 1950s and 60s he was a frequent guest on TV variety shows such as  Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Merv Griffin, Perry Como, and Dick Clark, who  regularly featured him on "American Bandstand."      Monte retired to  Florida with his 2nd wife in 1982 and died there on June 12, 1989.  His  philanthropic efforts led to the donation of the Lou Monte, Jr. leukemia  lab at the College of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, NJ, named after  his son who died of the disease at the age of 21.
