Moms Mabley - Moms Mabley At The White House Conference 1965

On: Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Moms Mabley
Loretta Mary Aiken
aka Jackie Mabley
Brevard, North Carolina, USA
Mar 19 1894 – May 23 1975 age 81

One of the most amusing and beloved “characters” in comedy, earthy Moms Mabley would come out on stage in a garish, bulky dress and start lecturing the audience as if they were her children. She was comically stern and raucously emphatic, laying down her philosophies of life and love: “Love is just like a game of checkers, children. You sure got to know which man to move! ‘Cause if you move the wrong man, and he jump ya, tear your Mason and Dixon line up!”
Her favorite subject was changing times. She talked about her own problems with it: “Anybody who acts normal nowadays they’re probably just not well! I’m tellin’ you, I just don’t understand. If I go too fast, I’ll run into something, if I go too slow somethin’ll run into me.” Though she looked comically battered, rasping out her routines through a seemingly toothless mouth, her words were hip, her delivery feisty. A running gag was her hunt for swinging young men: “The only thing an old man can do for me is to get on a bicycle and bring me a message from a young man!” She insisted, “A woman is a woman until the day she dies. But a man’s a man only as long as he can!” ~excerpt, dead-frog.com

Andrew Dice Clay - Face Down Ass Up 2000

On: Thursday, October 17, 2013

Andrew Dice Clay
Andrew Clay Silverstein
Sep 29 1957 -

Amazingly, this 1980s icon of sexual loathing and resentment has managed to keep his career going into the new millennium. All of the things the comedian is known for--misogyny, racism, free-floating anger--are on full display here. For Dice Clay, sex is an instrument of domination and humiliation. His riffs on the subject are repetitive and dull; the man makes any sex act sound as exciting as a plumbing maneuver. The comic's nasty remarks about Asians on "K2Y/China Diner" are as clichéd as they are awful. On "Midgets 2000" he goes after midgets with inexplicable hostility. Can this rant actually be considered comedy? Face Down, Ass Up's irritated trash talk feels like it goes on for hours. This is the work of one tired, juiceless bad boy. Dice Clay, or at least his comic persona, appears to be played out. ~Ian Conde Amazon
